Facts About Down Syndrome


  • The three types of Down Syndrome

  • are Nondisjunction Trisomy 21 which is found in 95% of people with Down Syndrome, Translocation Trisomy (8%) and Mosaicism (1 %). This genetic disorder does not discriminate against age, race or religion.

  • 75 % of parents of Down Syndrome children are under age 35.

  • 40-45% of babies born with Down Syndrome have heart defects.

  • While the physical growth of children with Down Syndrome is slower, they are able to attend school, participate in sports and flourish in their communities.

  • You may be offered a "Triple Markers" screening between 15-20 weeks of pregnancy. While it is not a diagnostic test, it is 60% accurate in detecting Down Syndrome in fetuses.
